Why Working Cats?

Working cats – or barn cats – are independent cats who thrive when they have freedom to roam in a safe environment. These cats are too feisty or fearful of people to enjoy life as a companion housecat.

Your barn, greenhouse, workshop, or other outbuilding can be a great place to employ one or more working cats. You’ll save the life of a cat and they will provide a natural source of rodent control.

What You Provide

In addition to daily food and water (cats cannot live on mice alone) you will need to provide a dry safe place for your cat to live in all seasons. They will need routine yearly vaccines, flea and tick preventative, and medical care if sick or injured.

What We Provide

All BCSPCA working cats are spayed or neutered, so you won’t have to worry about endless litters of kittens appearing. They are also vaccinated, microchipped, and tested for feline leukemia and FIV. We will give you guidance to help your cat make a good transition to its new environment. And we are available to answer your questions along the way.

Adopt a Working Cat

We almost always have working/barn cats available for adoption. You can search by Working Cat here using the filter for Animal Type. If you don’t see any working cats listed, please call either shelter for assistance. (Lahaska: 215-794-7425; Quakertown: 267-347-4674)

The $10 adoption fee for working cats is a great deal! Consider adopting a pair for their benefit and yours.
