Pet Microchips: What you NEED to know

You can register your pet’s microchip for FREE. This connects your name and contact information to their unique ID number for FREE. You can update your contact information if it changes for FREE. If your pet is found and scanned, you will be contacted for FREE.

Why are we beating the drum about this FREE basic service?

Some pet owners have been confused by advertising for optional or premium microchip services that come with monthly or lifetime fees. Paid premium services may be worthwhile for some adopters, but they are not required to be contacted if your pet is found through their microchip number.

How does microchip registration work anyway?

👉 The cost of a microchip is included in your adoption fee when you adopt a cat, dog, or rabbit from the Bucks County SPCA. You can purchase a microchip from your veterinarian if you got your pet from another source. This initial microchip cost includes implant of the chip and FREE lifetime registration in a database that connects your contact information with your pet’s unique microchip number.

👉 When you adopt a cat, dog, or rabbit from Bucks County SPCA your new pet is already microchipped and our staff will register the microchip for you at the time of adoption. Our microchips are from 24PetWatch. If you need to update your contact information, you can login at their new website PetPlace.com using your email address or call them at 1-833-313-2711 for help accessing your account or making updates to your contact information. For FREE.

👉 Updating contact information is critical. Nothing is more heartbreaking than not being able to contact the owner of a chipped pet because the information on file is incorrect. If you change your phone number or address, update your contact information with the microchip company. For FREE.

👉 When a found pet is scanned for a microchip, the number is displayed on the scanner. Animal shelters, veterinarians, and animal control teams scan pets and look up the microchip number in a national database to find the owner’s information and notify them that their pet has been found. For FREE.

👉 If you re-home your pet, you can notify the microchip company, or the new owner can contact the microchip company who will then reach out to you to confirm the transfer. For FREE.

👉 You may decide to purchase additional premium services (like a live phone call from the microchip company rather than automated calls, messages, and emails), but you can decline paid options and be confident that you will still be contacted if your pet is found (and your information is up to date). We make live phone calls for FREE.

👉 Microchips are fabulous, but don’t forget that a collar with an ID tag can get a pet home even faster than a microchip scan.
